Following the first phase of the exhibition programme, dedicated to the first half of the twentieth century – Pistoia Novecento 1900–1945, curated by Annamaria Iacuzzi and Philip Rylands (18 April 2019 – 23 August 2020) – this second phase, entitled An Overview of the Art of the Post-World War II Period, aims to provide an overall picture of the second half of the century in Pistoia. It includes the painters and sculptors committed to figurative representation starting from the post-war years; the explorations of abstract art by Gualtiero Nativi, Mario Nigro and Fernando Melani; the binary logic of Gianfranco Chiavacci’s works; the radical design of Archizoom; the Pop paintings and objects of Roberto Barni, Umberto Buscioni, Adolfo Natalini and Gianni Ruffi; Remo Gordigiani’s collages; as well as artists who became active during the last quarter of the century: the long-term temporary exhibition An Overview of the Art of the Post-World War II Period curated by Alessandra Acocella, Annamaria Iacuzzi and Caterina Toschi boasts more than seventy works altogether.
