Museum of the Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi
Home to medieval and modern art collections, the museum – which also includes an area devoted to archaeology – is currently undergoing extensive renovation and enhancement as part of a new museological and museographic project. While work is still underway, the Museo Aperto (Open Museum) exhibition itinerary allows visitors to see some of the most iconic rooms of the Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi.
The itinerary allows visitors to admire the architecture of the palace from close up, such as the sacristy of San Jacopo mentioned by Dante in his Inferno, the Chapel of San Nicola, the portico and façade of the Cathedral overlooking the Baptistery and the Piazza del Duomo, along with some masterpieces from the collections: the Millefiori or Adoration tapestry, a breathtaking artwork; Giovanni Pisano’s wooden angel, one of the most compelling and challenging statues of the Middle Ages; Giovanni Boldini’s vast cycle of wall temperas; and Piero and Elena Bigongiari’s collection of 17th-century Florentine paintings.
Maps, information materials and panels, together with QR codes giving more in-depth information online, accompany visitors on a journey that ranges from Etruscan art to the 19th century, with highlights from the Middle Ages and the 17th century.
